Reselling versus referring
There are two ways to make money from software you do not own.
Traditional reselling. You buy licences at a discount, sell them at a higher price, and handle the billing, the support and the chasing of late payments. You set the price, but you carry the cost and the risk.
Referral partnership. The customer buys directly from the software company, and you are paid a share of what they pay. You do not set the price, but there is nothing to buy up front and nothing to support afterwards.
For most people starting out, referring is the simpler route. UtilitySEO works this way.
What you need to start
Not much, but three things matter:
- People who already ask you for recommendations. Clients, readers, followers, a local business network.
- An honest reason to recommend it. If you would not use or suggest the product without the commission, people will notice.
- A clear label. Tell people it is a referral link. UK advertising rules expect it, and it keeps their trust.
The product you would be recommending
UtilitySEO is SEO software for small businesses and agencies. It runs a full-site SEO audit and turns it into a priority fix list with a CSV export, tracks rankings from Google Search Console, and checks every week how a brand appears in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Anyone can try a free 30-second scan first, and onboarding help is free.
There are two plans. Entrepreneur is £48 a month or £400 a year. Enterprise is £149 a month or £1,490 a year and adds white-label reports and unlimited seats, projects and AI.
The maths
You earn 50% of every payment a customer you referred makes, for up to 12 months from their first payment.
A customer on Entrepreneur monthly pays £48 and you get £24 a month, £288 in total if they stay a year. A customer on Enterprise monthly earns you £74.50 a month, £894 over a year. On yearly plans, your half is paid a twelfth a month. That is the arithmetic of our prices, not an income promise.
You are paid monthly to PayPal or Wise, with no minimum payout. Refunds and lost disputes come off your next payout, which never goes below zero.
