Lab data and field data disagree, and both are right

Almost every argument about page speed comes from comparing two numbers that were never measuring the same thing.

Lab data is a single synthetic load on a fixed device and connection. Lighthouse runs the page once, on a throttled mid-tier mobile profile, in a clean browser with no extensions and no cache. It is reproducible and it isolates cause, which is why it is the right tool for debugging. It also swings by several points between identical runs, because CPU contention on the measuring machine changes the result.

Field data is what actually happened to real people. Google collects it in the Chrome User Experience Report from opted-in Chrome users, aggregated over a rolling 28-day window. It reflects your real audience, their real devices, their real networks, and their cached second visits. It is the data Google uses for the page experience signal.

So a page can score 62 in Lighthouse and still pass its field metrics comfortably, usually because the real audience is on faster hardware than the throttled test profile. The reverse also happens, and it matters more: a page can score 95 in the lab and fail in the field, because the lab never loaded the cookie banner, the chat widget, the consent-gated analytics or the third-party font that real users get.

What actually moves the number

In practice the wins cluster in a short list. Images that are larger than their display size, or served in a format the browser has to work harder to decode. Render-blocking CSS and synchronous scripts in the head. Fonts loaded without a display strategy, so text stays invisible while they download. Third-party embeds, which are frequently the single largest cost and the one nobody owns. And server response time, which no amount of front-end work can compensate for.

The trap is optimising for the score rather than the experience. Deferring a script until after the measurement window improves the number and changes nothing for the person waiting.

How UtilitySEO handles this

We run the audit against both mobile and desktop and report the four Lighthouse categories separately rather than collapsing them into one figure, because a site with strong performance and weak accessibility needs a different plan to the reverse. Every issue comes back with the reason it was flagged and what to change, ordered by impact.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, speed is a ranking factor. UtilitySEO measures it and lists the specific fixes to improve it.
Lab tests are a single simulated load, and the result depends on how busy the measuring machine was at that moment. Variance of several points between identical runs is normal and expected. Judge trends across several runs rather than reacting to one number, and use field data when you want to know what real visitors experience.
Usually not. The gap between 60 and 85 is where nearly all the real-world benefit sits, and it is mostly images, blocking resources and third-party scripts. Getting from 95 to 100 tends to mean removing things your visitors actually wanted, for a difference no human perceives.
