Internal links are the cheapest ranking fix you control
Most sites have pages that deserve to rank and simply do not get enough links from the rest of the site. Search engines find, understand and weigh pages partly through the links between them, so a page that only the sitemap points to is a page you are telling Google is not very important.
What good internal linking looks like
Links from relevant pages. A link from a page about the same topic carries far more meaning than one dropped into a footer on every page.
Descriptive anchor text. The words you link tell search engines what the target page is about. "Click here" tells them nothing; "boiler servicing in Leeds" tells them a lot.
No orphans. Every page you want to rank should be reachable from at least one other page in normal browsing, not only from the sitemap.
Your strongest pages sharing the weight. Pages that already earn traffic and links are the best places to link from, because they pass the most value.
