What a backlink checker can and cannot tell you

Why two tools never report the same number

Ask three backlink checkers how many links point at your site and you get three answers, sometimes differing by an order of magnitude. None is lying. Each has crawled a different portion of the web, applies a different rule for what counts as a link worth reporting, and discards spam at a different threshold.

This matters most when you compare yourself to a competitor. Doing that across two different tools is meaningless. Comparing within one tool is fine, because the same rules applied to both sides cancel out.

The metric that actually predicts rankings

Total backlink count is close to useless. A single site linking to you a thousand times in a sidebar produces a thousand backlinks and roughly the influence of one.

Referring domains is the number that matters: how many distinct sites link to you at all. Fifty links from fifty domains is worth far more than five thousand from ten. When you audit a profile, sort by referring domain and ignore the raw total.

After that, relevance beats authority. A link from a small site in your industry usually does more than a high-authority link from an unrelated directory, because the surrounding context tells Google what your page is about.

What to actually do with the data

Find your best pages. The pages that already earn links are where your authority sits. Linking from them to pages you want to rank is the fastest use of a backlink report, and costs nothing.

Check for lost links. A link that disappeared is a page that changed or a site that went down. Some are worth an email.

Audit competitors for gaps, not counts. Which sites link to two competitors but not you is a prospect list. Their total link count is trivia.

Ignore disavow unless you have a manual action. Google has been explicit that it discounts most spam links automatically, and the disavow file is a specialist tool that does more harm than good in casual hands.

Where UtilitySEO fits, honestly

Backlink analysis sits alongside the crawl and Search Console data rather than in its own silo, so you can see which linked pages actually earn impressions and which of your rankings depend on them.

It is not a competitor to Ahrefs or Majestic on index size. Those companies have spent a decade building crawlers nobody has matched, and if deep link prospecting is your main job you should buy one of them. What is here is enough to audit your own profile, find your strongest pages and spot losses, in the same tool that tells you what to fix.

Backlink analysis is the job of looking at which other sites link to yours, deciding which of those links are doing anything, and acting on the answer. It is not the same as counting links. Most of a link profile is noise, and the work is separating the few that carry weight from the many that do not.

There is no template to download here, because a template would just be these six steps with boxes around them. Work through them in order:

  1. Pull your referring domains, not your links. One site linking a thousand times is one relationship, not a thousand.
  2. Sort by relevance to your subject, then by authority. A small site in your field usually beats a big unrelated one.
  3. Find the pages that already earn links. That is where your authority sits, and internal links from those pages are free.
  4. List the links you have lost. Some are a page that moved and are worth an email.
  5. Compare against two competitors and look for gaps, meaning sites that link to both of them and not to you. That is your prospect list.
  6. Stop. Do not build a disavow file unless you have a manual action.

Reports, dashboards and the free version

The backlink data sits in the same dashboard as your crawl and Search Console figures rather than in its own tab, which is the point: a link only matters if the page it points at earns impressions. Any view exports to CSV, and reports can be scheduled and white labelled for clients. The free scan does not cover backlinks, but the app does, free for 14 days without a credit card.

For finding every link on the web, no, and it would be a strange thing to claim. Ahrefs and Majestic have spent a decade building crawlers nobody has matched, and if link prospecting at scale is your job you should buy one of them. The best backlink checker tool for auditing your own profile, spotting losses and deciding what to fix next is the one that also holds your rankings and crawl data, because that is the comparison that changes a decision.

Analysing a competitor's backlinks is not the same work as auditing yours, and the useful output is not a number. Your own audit asks "what have I got and what is breaking". A competitor backlink analysis asks one question: which sites link to them and not to me?

That list is the only part worth your afternoon. Everything else a competitor backlink analysis tool shows you, their total links, their domain rating, the growth chart, is context you cannot act on.

The method, and it works with any tool:

  1. Pick two rivals who genuinely outrank you for a query you care about, not the biggest names in the category. A site ten times your size is not a useful comparison.
  2. Pull referring domains for both, not links.
  3. Find the overlap, meaning the domains linking to both of them. A site that has linked to two competitors is demonstrably willing to write about this category, which makes it a warm prospect rather than a cold one.
  4. Subtract the ones already linking to you.
  5. Sort what is left by relevance, then check each one is a real site a human updates.

What you end up with is a prospect list in priority order, which is the point.

Compare within one tool, never across two. Every backlink index has crawled a different slice of the web, so your count from one tool against a competitor's count from another is meaningless arithmetic. The same rules applied to both sides cancel out; different rules do not.

Frequently asked questions

Each crawls a different slice of the web and applies its own rules for which links to report and how aggressively to filter spam. Compare within one tool, never across two.
There is no threshold. Referring domains matter far more than total links, and relevance matters more than either. Fifty links from fifty relevant sites beats thousands from a handful.
Backlinks counts every individual link. Referring domains counts distinct websites. A sitewide sidebar link creates thousands of backlinks from one referring domain and carries roughly the weight of one.
Almost certainly not. Google discounts most spam links automatically, and disavow is a specialist tool that can remove links that were helping. Use it if you have a manual action, otherwise leave it alone.
Yes. Backlinks and referring domains sit next to your crawl and your Search Console data, so you can see which linked pages actually earn impressions rather than reading a link count on its own.
Working out which sites link to you, which of those links are actually doing something, and what to do about it. The useful unit is referring domains rather than total links, because one site linking a thousand times is one relationship.
Pull referring domains, sort by relevance then authority, find the pages that already earn links, list the links you have lost, compare against two competitors to find gap prospects, and leave the disavow file alone unless you have a manual action. The six steps are set out in full above.
Yes, within the trial: the app, backlinks included, is free for 14 days with no credit card. The no-signup free scan covers Google scores and a fix list, not backlinks. There is no separate downloadable template or whitepaper, because the method is six steps and they are on this page.
A plan for earning links on purpose rather than hoping. In practice it is three things: publishing something worth citing, asking the people who already cite your competitors, and linking internally from the pages that already have authority. The third is free and most sites have not done it.
Pull referring domains for two rivals who actually outrank you, find the domains linking to both, subtract the ones already linking to you, and sort what is left by relevance. The overlap is the useful part: a site that has written about two competitors is a warm prospect. Their total link count is trivia.
For the deepest index, Ahrefs or Majestic, and we would not pretend otherwise. For the gap list itself, any tool that reports referring domains will do, because the work is set arithmetic rather than crawl size. The one rule that matters is comparing both sides inside a single tool, never across two.
