What a backlink checker can and cannot tell you

Why two tools never report the same number

Ask three backlink checkers how many links point at your site and you get three answers, sometimes differing by an order of magnitude. None is lying. Each has crawled a different portion of the web, applies a different rule for what counts as a link worth reporting, and discards spam at a different threshold.

This matters most when you compare yourself to a competitor. Doing that across two different tools is meaningless. Comparing within one tool is fine, because the same rules applied to both sides cancel out.

The metric that actually predicts rankings

Total backlink count is close to useless. A single site linking to you a thousand times in a sidebar produces a thousand backlinks and roughly the influence of one.

Referring domains is the number that matters: how many distinct sites link to you at all. Fifty links from fifty domains is worth far more than five thousand from ten. When you audit a profile, sort by referring domain and ignore the raw total.

After that, relevance beats authority. A link from a small site in your industry usually does more than a high-authority link from an unrelated directory, because the surrounding context tells Google what your page is about.

What to actually do with the data

Find your best pages. The pages that already earn links are where your authority sits. Linking from them to pages you want to rank is the fastest use of a backlink report, and costs nothing.

Check for lost links. A link that disappeared is a page that changed or a site that went down. Some are worth an email.

Audit competitors for gaps, not counts. Which sites link to two competitors but not you is a prospect list. Their total link count is trivia.

Ignore disavow unless you have a manual action. Google has been explicit that it discounts most spam links automatically, and the disavow file is a specialist tool that does more harm than good in casual hands.

Where UtilitySEO fits, honestly

Backlink analysis sits alongside the crawl and Search Console data rather than in its own silo, so you can see which linked pages actually earn impressions and which of your rankings depend on them.

It is not a competitor to Ahrefs or Majestic on index size. Those companies have spent a decade building crawlers nobody has matched, and if deep link prospecting is your main job you should buy one of them. What is here is enough to audit your own profile, find your strongest pages and spot losses, in the same tool that tells you what to fix.

Backlink checker questions

Each crawls a different slice of the web and applies its own rules for which links to report and how aggressively to filter spam. Compare within one tool, never across two.
There is no threshold. Referring domains matter far more than total links, and relevance matters more than either. Fifty links from fifty relevant sites beats thousands from a handful.
Backlinks counts every individual link. Referring domains counts distinct websites. A sitewide sidebar link creates thousands of backlinks from one referring domain and carries roughly the weight of one.
Almost certainly not. Google discounts most spam links automatically, and disavow is a specialist tool that can remove links that were helping. Use it if you have a manual action, otherwise leave it alone.
No, and it does not claim to be. Ahrefs and Majestic have far larger link indexes. What UtilitySEO adds is backlink data joined to your crawl and Search Console data, so you can see which linked pages actually earn impressions.
