Who are your local search competitors?

Your local search competitors are whoever appears when your customers search, and that is often not the list of businesses you think of as rivals.

To find them, search the way a customer would, from the area you serve: your main service with and without the town name, such as "dentist Harrogate", "emergency dentist" and "dentist near me". Note three groups:

  1. The map pack. The businesses in the local results with the map. These compete with your Google Business Profile.

  1. The results below it. Other local businesses' websites, but also directories, review sites and national chains with a page for your town. A directory ranking above you is a competitor for the click even though it sells nothing you do.
  2. Businesses that appear for some searches and not others. A rival that shows for "emergency dentist" but not "dentist" is competing for your most urgent customers.

Repeat the search for each town or area you serve, because local search competitors differ from one to the next. Then compare what the leaders have that you do not: the categories on their Business Profile, how many reviews they have and how recent they are, and whether they have a page for each service and each area. Those differences are usually more useful than any score.

UtilitySEO tracks up to five competitor websites on Entrepreneur and unlimited on Enterprise, comparing each one's overall website score with yours, and records whether AI assistants recommend them or you. It does not track the map pack, so for Business Profile rankings use one of the local tools above alongside it.
