Cheaper than what I was using and far easier to get around. I had never seen keyword data laid out so visually before, the topic clusters especially, which made the whole thing easy to understand.

Not a ranking factor, still worth getting right

Google has stated plainly that meta descriptions are not a ranking factor and have not been for many years. That is true, and it is routinely misread as meaning they do not matter. They do, just not where people look for the effect.

The description is advertising copy in the results page. It does not change where you appear; it changes how many people choose you once you are there. On a page already earning impressions, that is often the fastest improvement available, because you are converting demand that already exists instead of trying to create more.

Google will frequently rewrite yours

This is the part that surprises people. Search engines regularly replace the description with an extract from the page that better matches the specific query, and this happens on a large share of results. It is not a penalty. It is the engine deciding your description was less relevant to this particular search than something else on the page.

Two things follow. Your description is a strong suggestion rather than a guarantee, so it is not worth agonising over. And the more useful lever is often the page content itself, since that is what gets extracted when your description is overridden.

What works

Around 150 to 160 characters is the practical ceiling before truncation on desktop, and mobile cuts sooner. Truncation is not fatal, but the important part should come first.

Match the intent of the query rather than describing the page in the abstract. Someone searching for a comparison wants to know you compare; someone searching for a definition wants to know you define it. Include the terms people actually search, since matched words are bolded and bolding draws the eye. Say something concrete: a number, a specific capability, a real differentiator. Avoid writing the same description twice, because duplicates across a site are a signal of templated, low-effort pages.

How UtilitySEO handles this

Missing, duplicated and truncated descriptions surface in the site audit alongside everything else, prioritised by the pages actually earning impressions, since rewriting descriptions on pages nobody sees is effort with no return.

UtilitySEO doesn't overwhelm you with useless data.

Easy to use and makes tracking my info so much better.

Jamie P.

I moved over from a much pricier suite and I have not missed a feature yet.

The audit tells me what to do next instead of handing me a list and wishing me luck.

Fay S.

The briefs and drafts save me a serious amount of time.

I still edit everything, but I am starting from something real rather than a blank page.

Abby R.

Every site I look after is in one place now.

I can see what moved, what I changed and which pages are slipping, without keeping spreadsheets to hold it together.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, UtilitySEO flags missing, duplicate or too-short meta descriptions across your whole site, with guidance to fix them.
Because it judged another passage on your page a better answer to that specific query. This is normal and happens on a large share of results. If the replacement is consistently poor, the fix is usually in the page content being extracted rather than in the description tag.
Every page you want clicks on does. For pages that exist for other reasons, leaving it empty and letting the engine extract a relevant passage is often better than a vague sentence written to fill the field. A weak description is worse than none.
The Entrepreneur plan is £48/mo with every tool unlocked, site audits, keyword and rank tracking, competitor monitoring, AI fix lists and AI brand tracking. Enterprise is £149/mo for unlimited seats, projects and white-label. There are no per-feature add-ons.
